(Chicagoans!) “An Evening of Short Plays” by Jim Blair, Feb. 6-8 at NEIU
Jim Blair was one of the first people at NEIU to be kind to me--I think we all know how contingent faculty are treated, especially when they are just hired.
Not only that: he took me seriously as an artist, as a poet; during the few times I read my work on campus, he would show up and compliment me--not only out of kindness and politeness but out of a real pleasure in language-tinkering, as kinship.
Later I became friends with his daughter, the poet Jen Blair, who is also my colleague at NEIU, though her dad is now retired. I once emailed with the publisher and artist Marc Fischer about orders of books for students, and he emailed me back that his wife would bring the box into work with her, and I could get it there. I had no idea it was Jen! One building away. We kept revealing more and more webs of kinship and connection. The Blairs came to a poetry reading, Jen read poems, I realized her mom had also taught at NEIU. Her parents met at NEIU! We have other completely unexpected friends in common, too.
But the first Blair I met was Jim Blair, and he is lovely. Look at this event!!!

Stage Center Theatre continues its 2024-2025 season with an incredible special event, “An Evening of Short Plays,” by Jim Blair. This event brings together a cast of Stage Center favorites live onstage in two one-act plays, "Designer Genes" and "The Happy Hour." Performed by a dynamic blend of current NEIU staff and faculty members alongside a few long-time collaborators of Stage Center, this evening brings to life the voice of James "Jim" Blair, founder of Stage Center's Nuevas Voces festival and longtime instructor of playwriting and writing at NEIU. Jim's storytelling voice is bitingly humorous, irreverent and insightful. Stage Center celebrates his work in this one weekend run that brings these works to life as only NEIU can! Tickets are free for Northeastern students, faculty and staff with valid University ID, and can be claimed at the Welcome Desk and Box Office, via walk-up before each performance in the Building F Lobby or in advance at Tix.com. All tickets are general admission. |
