November 18th also saw the release of The Slaughterhouse of Dreams by 2024 National Book Award finalist, Fiston Mwanza Mujila (translated by J. Bret Maney.) This is a collection of kasàlà, a poetic form unique to the Congolese cultural traditions and originating in the Cilubà language, spoken in the Democratic republic of Congo.
The Slaughterhouse of Dreams is a rhythmic and propulsive collection that brings to life the landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as it mourns the poisoning of that same landscape. Ecologically-minded and thematically rich, this collection resonates with gorgeous fury in a translation by J. Bret Maney—translator for Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s first poetry collection, The River in the Belly (2021)
