It's the time of year when the weather in the Dallas area becomes randomly and rapidly hostile. As we prepare for our yearly winter storm, I'm also preparing a mental list of books fitting for icy weather. The criteria for this list are rather simple: something relatively long and experimental, complete with lush language. Essentially, the description of most of the Dalkey Archive Press catalog. Our two most recent releases, Palinuro of Mexico by Fernando del Paso, translated by Elizabeth Plaister, and Antic Hay by Aldous Huxley, are perfect fits for reading days on end.

Palinuro of Mexico is many things. It's a work of fearless ambition, a literary puzzle, an encyclopedia of human anatomy, a labyrinthine tour de force set to romantic lyricism. Beloved by many, reviewers have deliciously described this book as having “confectionery writing” (Books (London)), where “nearly every page reveals an exquisite chaos of sensual imagery,” (Lori Feathers, Interabang Books). Order Now Antic Hay is yet another lyrical and absurd book filled with characters whose identities shift and change as often as their names and appearances. Huxley has here invented a novel that bristles with life and energy, in what The New York Times called “a delirium of sense enjoyment!” Much like Palinuro of Mexico, you will find the language of Antic Hay to be filled with “a pure and rhythmic beauty,” (Saturday Review). This edition includes an afterword from the founder of the Review of Contemporary Fiction and Dalkey Archive Press, John O’Brien.

Get the book Cobra By Severo Sarduy Translated by Suzanne Jill Levine Introduction by James McCourt The late Severo Sarduy was one of the most outrageous and baroque of the Latin American Boom writers of the sixties and seventies, and Cobra was his finest creation. Get the book Flame Trees In May By Karla Marrufo Translated by Allison A. DeFreese In her most experimental work to date, Karla Marrufo Huchim explores universal themes with appreciable specificity: loneliness, family angst, memory loss—from a perspective belonging singularly to a native of the Yucatán Peninsula. Mayo’s unnamed narrator is an older woman, isolated in her domestic life, who is both suffering from memory loss and intent on recounting the lives of three generations of her family. The Yucatán culture and community that Marrufo describes through her narrator’s fine but faltering mind will be foreign but not fetishized for American readers.
