Canadian Poets Series #31 : Brandi Bird
Brandi Bird is an Indigiqueer Saulteaux, Cree and Métis writer from Treaty 1 territory. They currently live on the lands of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh & Musqueam peoples (Vancouver, BC). Their first book of poetry, The All + Flesh (Anansi, 2023), won an Indigenous Voices Award and was a finalist for the Gerald Lampert, Raymond Souster and Governor General’s awards. Their second collection, Pitiful (Anansi, 2026), is a candid account of recovery from eating disorders. See reviews of Pitiful via Joanna Streetly at The British Columbia Review, Jody Chan at The Grind and rob mclennan at his clever blog. Recent poems exist online at Send My Love To Anyone, CV2, Hazlitt, Carousel, Metatron and via the Winnipeg Arts Council, and Heidi Elder interviewed Bird this past spring for periodicities: a journal of poetry and poetics.
Brandi works in Communications and is available for freelance work in writing, editing and workshop facilitation. They have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and are completing their first novel and third collection of poetry.
Brandi loves pop-culture and their favourite TV show is still Hannibal even though the show was cancelled by NBC over a decade ago. They love their three ancient cats, Babydoll, Burt, and Etta, who all live in the stars now. They love cats and adopted two new tiny feline daughters, Margot and Jude, who are very much alive in Brandi's decrepit low-rise apartment.
