New issue of Notre Dame Review is released today! Includes poems by Will Alexander, Sarah Vap, Ken Chen, Antonio Gamoneda (trans Katherine Hedeen and Víctor Rodríguez Núñez), Cynthia Cruz, Nilay Ozer (trans. Aron Aji), Tom Branfoot, and J. C. Bustriazo Ortiz (trans. Michelle Gil-Montero) and others. Also reviews of books by Monica McClure and Mette Moestrup. Will Alexander contributes aphorisms from his current project. Ken Chen’s poems are from his underworld book. Spanish poet Gamoneda is one of my favorite living poets, a poet I’ve read perhaps more than anybody else over the past couple of years. Bustriazo Ortiz, the underground legend of the Argentine Pampas whose work survives primarily in manuscripts held by friend, is another poet I’ve been obsessed with the past few years. These poems are from his witch-book, Book of the Ghenpin. Gil-Montero is doing a heroic job as translator - and curator, collector -of these incredibly playful poems. Sarah Vap’s poems are excerpts from her recently completed huge long poem channeling Lucy for a question-and-answer session of a few hundred pages. I’m currently conducting an interview with Vap about this book. Wonderfully ambitious. There’s a bunch more poets, many of them young and brilliant . Please check out the whole journal. I’ll post some more excerpts and commentary online, but for the full effect, you will need to buy the whole issue. |
